Dal-Bo on Suffolk farm ……..

Hill House Farm, Aspall is an 800 acre arable farm comprising mainly Beccles/Ragdale silty clay and owned by C J R Freeman & Partners. A typical rotation is 2 wheats followed by rape with an area of sugar beet on an area of easier working soil. While most of the primary cultivation is carried out with a sub-soiler/disc combination, ploughing for second wheat and sugar beet has allowed the farm to keep the dreaded blackgrass under control. Farm Manager, James Faulds, knows the importance of working this soil type when conditions are favourable and for this reason added an 8m Dal-Bo Cultimax seed bed cultivator and a set of Dal-Bo 12.3m rolls to their armoury 3 years ago. “These machines have the capacity to cover large areas in a short time and have done a good job for us in the short window between harvest and autumn drilling” comments James. asting an eye across the autumn drilled wheat and rape bears testimony to what has been achieved at Hill House Farm under what we all know have been testing conditions.

Rolling Efficiency ……..

Across the other side of Suffolk is an area of Hanslope boulder clay where  Davison Farms (Suffolk) Ltd are cropping an area of 3,500 acres of predominantly combine-able crops.
The rotation is chiefly rape, wheat, wheat, beans/rape with an area of winter barley and sugar beet where soil type permits or the 3 crop rule dictates. While the plough is used rotationally every 3 or 4 years, most primary cultivations are carried out with a 6m Keeble on a large rubber track crawler. Consolidation of seed beds post drilling is very important on this soil type to minimise slug activity and to achieve good seed to soil contact. For the past 3 years this was carried out with a set of Dal-Bo 12.3m rolls – the move to 32m tramlines this year resulted in these being changed for a 16.3m set. Ron Davison commented “We had been very pleased with the 12.3m rolls, their ease of folding and secure/narrow transport width was much appreciated and it was therefore a logical step that we would purchase Dal-Bo’s 16.3m set to fit our new tramline dimensions”
